A Hampstead church is making a bold bid to solve the acute shortage of primary school places in Camden by establishing the borough’s first ‘free’ school next year, writes Susanna Wilkey in the Ham and High.

With the strong backing of its parishioners, St Luke’s Church on Kidderpore Avenue has applied to the Department of Education to set up a free school to cater for 15 children in each of the seven primary year groups.

The much-touted Conservative free school policy allows charities, businesses and groups of parents or teachers to set up state schools outside of local authority control.

If this application is successful, the school could be one of the first of its kind to open in the country in September next year.

Olympic Cycling Brakes Applied for Hampstead

Hampstead and Highgate are to miss out on hosting one of the showpiece events in the 2012 Olympics, the Ham&High has learned.

The route for the road cycling races – originally planned to go from Regent’s Park up to Hampstead Heath – is to be switched to outside London.

Sources at the 2012 organising committee and Camden Council confirmed the news to the Ham&High this week although the committee refused to officially confirm the news until a “final decision” is made.

The news comes after the International Cycling Union (UCI) asked 2012 chiefs to follow the example set at the Beijing Olympics and move the bulk of the course outside of the city.

The decision has led to disappointment for residents and cycling fans.

Snow and Boy George In Hampstead

Boy George rushed out to buy essential supplies to cope with the heavy snow that has fallen in the UK.

He made sure he was prepared for the heavy snowfall that has hit London in the last two days by stocking up on essential goods.

He tweeted: “Hampstead is glorious, been to local shop for supplies, people are smiling. The snow is seriously heavy up on the hill in Hampstead. London is really in for it!”

London Rental Market Recovery

The return of business chiefs seeking second homes near their offices has helped to increase the value of rents in prime London locations for the first time in more than a year reports the Telegraph on line.
Demand from the corporate world had dried up following the financial crisis as the City cut jobs. However, with profits and bonuses on the rise again, rents are launching a recovery.
The growth is further evidence of an improvement in the economy and has been driven by locations such as Islington, Hampstead, St John’s Wood and Marylebone. Rental values increased 1pc in the quarter to September 30, the first rise since the second quarter of 2008, as supply of homes for rent also fell.
Rents had slumped by 11.8pc because the market was flooded with properties as homeowners rented out their homes rather than selling them because of the fall in house prices.
However, with house prices now recovering, transaction levels are soaring and rapidly eroding the number of “accidental landlords” looking to rent stock. This has, therefore, cut the supply of properties just as demand is recovering.
Rents on prime flats in Hampstead, St John’s Wood and Marylebone soared by 3.9pc in the past three months.

London Property for Sale Shortage

Agents, particularly across London and the south-east, are struggling to find anywhere near enough stock to sell as the normal autumn bounce has failed to materialise…

Propertyfinder has reported that the number of homes on the market this autumn is at its lowest since the aftermath of 9/11.

It found that agents within the M25 currently have an average of 26.4 homes to sell, compared with 41.8 last September and 32.3 in March this year.

Rightmove said today that in the whole of London, just 10,500 new listings have been added to stock in the last month – but 13,591 have come off.

That means that for every ten properties leaving the market, just eight came on.
